Role Ban or Server Ban: Just a warning
Round ID (if applicable): #5216
Reason for Warning:
"Engaged in multiple break ins and theft over the course of a round as a non antagonist."
What led up to the warning:
I had broke into captain's office and sat around until the captain came in the room. They locked me in with their door remote after talking to me and leaving. I sat around some more before breaking into their locker and stealing the following: 1 Command Headset. And stealing from their dresser, 1 Cap Cap, and 1 Captain's cloak.
(This is the only information discussed in the ticket, I did trespass into security later in the round with several other crewmembers, but this occurred during red alert when dragon was terrorizing the station and people believed security was understaffed. One other crewmember even stating as such when we were in security.)
Why I should have this warning removed:
This warning feels invalid based on the discrepancy between the stated reason, the actual events, and the guidance I've received in both the ticket and #admin-questions. I understand that my Discord responses had lacked full context, but they still raise concerns, especially considering on how the admin disregarded context in the ticket himself.
The warning claims that I committed "multiple break-ins and theft," however, I only did so twice:
1. The captain's office on blue alert, sat in the captain's office and did nothing for awhile, and damaged nothing, while the captain was aware and instead chose to lock me in and took no action against me.
2. Security, on red alert, alongside others, attempting to assist against a major threat (we were ultimately detained).
There were only two instances, the second of which was not discussed at all in the ticket, and the first one had a passive response from the affected victim. This objectively doesn't make it "multiple" instances of purely antagonistic theft.
During the ticket, JoulesBerg responded to my justification ("My character is a klepto who enjoys breaking space law" with:
A: “There is specifically an antagonist role for that. You can't just do it as crew.”
B: “It doesn’t matter what the item you took was, it's playing the game as a crew-aligned player performing as an antagonist would.”
To clarify, my character is a lizard named Thieves-Your-Things. His gimmick is to steal things, typically low-impact, minor ones, and return them. I avoid harassing security by self-antagging; and avoid adding more to their plate and potentially stressing them out needlessly. I have always done my job during emergencies, and never put the gimmick before my actual role. It was intended as a silly character concept. I'd like it also noted, that I had never resisted arrest nor had any attempt been made to arrest me.
Joule's point about the antagonistic role existing for theft is valid when considered completely on it's own, but context matters. My character concept may be toeing a line, but it's intended for lighthearted interaction and not genuine grief.
If even a single B&E theft is considered unacceptable (refer quote B, I mean item doesn't matter after all), that is fine. However, in practice, many rounds involve non-antags (refer quote A) breaking into areas and taking things without severe consequences. I've personally done this in the past without issue.
In the Discord, I asked:
"Acceptable amount of law-breaking IC? Seems like I see people break it all the time and turn out to not be antagonists by round end."
Tay Replied: “Non-antags breaking space law on Red alert or during something like that to the active hindrance of security will get bwoinked.”
My first theft was on blue alert with no real station threat, and the second was to help defend the crew against a station-wide crisis with what we thought to be under-staffed Security. Which differentiates it from opportunistic theft.
If my warning does not get removed, I am okay; but I would like the wording revised at the very least. While it is true I may have made a lapse in judgement, the wording makes it seem like I was running about and pillaging the station with the intent to grief.
