It's a grounded and realistic-feeling simulation of life on a space station, and that grounded feeling is what makes it so immersive and easy to roleplay in. While lizards with hair won't exactly ruin that, it will certainly create more leniency for more silly and nonsensical stuff that would eventually lead to losing that appeal.
