There’s a sentiment growing recently whereby certain people hate the TEG, and even questioning whether they can sabotage it within a round as they hate it so much OOC and because theyd rather weld some coils every half an hour or fill some rad collectors.
My opinion is this: TEG is by far the safest and most reliable form of power, and if there is a way to run it, you should.
As an Engineering department, a major part of your job is to provide constant, uninterrupted, safe power for the station. Which is why a lot of the time if I am an atmos tech I will run the TEG, because even if sabotaged, it can be easily rebuilt or reconfigured, and half the station doesn’t die. Unlike the singularity or the tesla. Some people see this as a negative.
The amount of times I have seen a tesloose or a singuloose end a round is uncountable, wether through accident or sabotage, and again people are rightly annoyed and sad when this happens. Granted, you can’t always win in this game, and accidents happen, shifts end prematurely, but in my opinion my number one priority when in Engineering is to STOP that happening.
What I suggest instead is not to remove the TEG, or nerf it to AME levels, or sabotage it in round, but rather give incentives to run multiple sources of power. A suggestion I’ve seen is selling excess power. I like the idea of achieving “unlocks” after making X amount of excess power, similar to how science unlocks tech, maybe there is a system where Engineers can only unlock advanced tools like the jaws and drill for the station by achieving an excess power level of some number.
