Role Ban, Server Ban, or Discord Ban: Role Ban (all command roles, appeal-only)
Round ID (if applicable): #15696*
Reason for Ban: "3rd offense over-escalation; crit over 3 hi-viz vests and insults. did not attempt to consult sec/command regarding the issue. please appeal on the forums when you feel like you're ready to come back!"
What lead up to the ban: A Cargo Technician broke into Engineering and stole hi-viz vests for a bounty. I, the Chief Engineer, reported this to Security and I believe they handled it.
Later, the same Cargo Technican used Engineering intercomms to repeatedly make remarks about how my character should "cope", was "coping", etc. about the theft. After this happened for some time (and after I verbally warned them I would "kill" them if it kept happening), I walked out of the department, softcrit them with a fire axe, and then walked away.
Why you should be unbanned: This is my third offence over-escalating as Chief Engineer specifically. While this doesn't necessarily look good on my part, at no point did I intentionally disobey or ignore rules. I read my prior notes/bans the wrong way due to the context in which they happened, and this lead to overescalation being a consistent issue.
For example, my prior infractions were related to overescalation relating to managing issues within my department. The surrounding situation and certain issues emphasised via ahelp in both cases lead me to believe that the issue was that those situations were unreasonable to escalate over at all in the first place, and not that the escalation was being done by a Command member in that manner.
I was also not aware that Command is supposed to defer such escalation to Security when possible until when this ban was issued**. This is something that has been touched on in some specific areas (such as carrying out demotions), but has never been made clear as an across-the-board rule, especially not in the rules accessible in-game.
However, I do acknowledge that my behaviour as a command member was problematic and I should've rectified that earlier. While command members are encouraged to play their characters selfishly, they should not be going around committing violent crime for petty reasons like I did. Sticking with an "axe-crazy" character archetype in this aspect was definitely a bad idea, and I'll lean into more suitable flaws for a Command role while playing one.
As a part of that, I'll make sure I don't overescalate as a Command member in the future, and instead employ methods that both follow the rules of escalation and make sense for the position my character is in at the company. I will also use the appropriate admin communication mediums to get a clearer understanding of escalation rules when necessary.
EDIT: I've since caught up to a reply to a post I made where Dimes explains the gist of how command members should escalate. This is exactly the kind of information I was going to inquire about and I'm now confident I can judge how the vast majority of situations can be escalated against without further inquiry. I still might need to ahelp later down the line for some really weird scenarios but this is a big help already.
* The round that I got banned for was #15696, however it's in the record as #15697 since a new round started between the banning admin first intervening and when I actually got banned.
** The first note I received did actually mention me not waiting for Security being an issue, but the conversation in ahelp to my memory was more focused around the budget console being Engineering-access and therefore not totally unreasonable for engineers to withdraw from. The note also including the reason muddied my interpretation a bit here.
