Briefly describe the background and/or personality of a character you enjoy playing (Can be SS14, DND, or a character you just made up!): My usual mode for devising characters, especially amongst my TTRPGs characters, is to pick out tropes I like which do not fit the usual expectations of my character and find ways to adapt them. Additionally, I try my best to play competent characters and, when they face setbacks either during play or off-camera, roleplay the process of them realising or accepting that they don't still have a lot to learn, or that they can't know everything. The best example I have for this is Zanril, my old half-elf bard drummerboy I played for a Curse of Strahd campaign.
Zanril was a mercenary at the time of play but, way before that, Zanril was a soldier. Instead of carrying a halberd and holding the line, he found his calling in steeling the morale of his comrades. During play, he'd speak fondly very often about those days, telling stories (which I would improvise on the fly) about surviving geese, battling bread-obssessed goblins, and becoming an impromptu laundrette, only to stain his sergeant's whites pink. He would tell these stories at any chance he could, offering them whenever anyone seemed to need advice.
During a personal crisis another character was going through, he confessed without shame how he deserted his post and why. This story was spoken matter of factly, toned down as to not dilute it with flowery language, common bravado or shame. After having been ordered to raid a town with the express understanding that they were disrupting supply lines for an upcoming raid, those who exacted the razing of a whole town, including Zanril, found that it wasn't a necessary evil. They weren't acting against them, and there was no raid. It was a petty action, done to create a fake example for any towns nearby in order to deter them from becoming an actual problem in the near future, and to raid their resources. After that, Zanril quietly left in the night with nothing but his uniform, his sword, a week's worth of rations, and his drum. He shares about how his guilt over striking down innocent people under orders changed him, and how he grew over time, in a hope to show the one he's speaking to that they should give themselves the time to heal.
What made you join Funky Station?: Been avoiding LRP servers for months, and MRP servers have worn on me at this point, with they way that roleplay is usually treated as an afterthough. Saw a reddit post sharing those feelings, and there were roughly 5 people all saying something to the effect of 'Yeah same, then I found funkystation'
