NanoTrasen Career Advisor interview log audio transcript archived from 14/07/2983, Station NT-CR413, Interrogation Room #23

[BEGIN AUDIO TRANSCRIPT]

The sound of heavy footsteps is audible, followed by a door opening and quickly slamming shut. The footsteps grow louder, and a sudden thud is audible.

[UNKNOWN VOICE] Good morning, it is lovely to meet you. Although, I must ask that you please treat all station property with respect, especially the property of your superiors.

[SECOND UNKNOWN VOICE] Sure.

Rustling, and another heavy thump is heard. Someone clears their throat behind the microphone.

[UNKNOWN VOICE] Now, please state your name, age, species, and current position for the record.

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] Alright. The name's December Martinez, I'm 26. Human. Mechanic for NanoTrasen. Sorry, Maintenance Technician.

The sound of rustling papers are heard close to the microphone.

[UNKNOWN VOICE] Have you worked any other positions with NanoTrasen?

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] Look, you've got my papers, you can see my history. Do I really need to explain everything?

Something taps twice against the microphone, followed by a drawn out sigh.

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] I joined this place as a security cadet, ages back, didn't make it halfway through training before I decided it wasn't for me and bounced.

[UNKNOWN VOICE] By which, you mean you were dishonourably discharged from service.

A chair is heard creaking, accompanied by a thump.

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] You.... fine, fine. If you really need to hear it from me, then we can do that. I was booted out for refusing to forcefully chase down and arrest some suspected crooks. Got put on the spot, all agitated 'cuz my smokes got nicked and well... N-nevermind. That's all that really matters, that I got booted. Rest is uhh... old news, really. And hopefully confidential under the general psychiatric care agreement.

[UNKNOWN VOICE] The incident in question breaches those terms, I'm afraid. Although, the details are only available to those with sufficient justification for accessing them.

A mumbled swear, barely audible to the microphone.

[UNKNOWN VOICE] Fortunately, this is not relevant to our discussion today. Moving on, please describe the role transfer you are seeking.

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] Does it say transfer on there? Well, it's less of a transfer, more of me just asking if I can get any sort of leadership responsibilities. Like, do you know how bad it is out there in the workshops? Half the team runs off and you don't hear from 'em until about five hours later when they show up acting like the king of the world, clean as a whistle while you're ankle-deep in engine oil. It's utter chaos, and I'm convinced half of these idiots wouldn't know wire cutters from a wrench if it belted 'em over the head. It's a humiliation ritual on loo-

The voice behind the microphone clears their throat.

[UNKNOWN VOICE] How would assigning additional responsibilities to you help to alleviate these alleged issues, Miss Martinez? What benefit would it bring to the NanoTrasen Corporation?

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] Fuck, right, sorry. I, uh, reckon I could help them do better. Help them be better at their jobs, and help the station run smoother overall. Work as an actual team, y'know? A few times, I've had to step up in an emergency and... it's felt a lot better. I've been told I teach well, if that helps?

[UNKNOWN VOICE] It does, although there are many factors to consider in assessing your case. Could you tell me about a time you had to "step up" during your work?

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] Well, I don't remember exactly when, I think it was a couple months back. Chief called in sick, business as usual, got everything set up and running like a dream. I was on smoko when the alarms started blaring, lights flashing red, the whole show in a panic. A warning comes crackling through the PAs, somethin' about meteors heading for the station. 'Course, I ran fast as I could to the monitoring room, fearin' that the end had come for us. Sucks for the end, 'cuz I was on the clock. When I got there, I heard these distant booms, what sounded like thunder from back home. Few seconds later, I was knocked off of my feet, even more alarms screechin' my ear off. Gettin' up and lookin' down at the air monitor, half the station was bleedin' red, said all the air was gone, exposed to space... We're not trained for shit like that, y'know? Knees almost gave out again, but I held strong. Not sure what possessed me, but I started barkin' out orders, callin' out the spacing like I had the fires of hell lickin' at my heels. The most surprising part? People actually answered, listenin' to me and helpin' me coordinate a response. I- I dunno what would've happened otherwise... P-point is, station's still running, and I'm pretty damn proud of that one. Sir.

[UNKNOWN VOICE] I'm very pleased to hear that, Miss Martinez. Your efforts in securing the integrity of NanoTrasen property are noted here, and worth commendation. Your skills and achievements are rather noteworthy, too.

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] Thank you, sir. Uh... does that mean I could get the job, or... what happens now?

[UNKNOWN VOICE] Personally, you seem suited to a role with more responsibilities, and your accolades complement your passion for improving workplace efficiency. This drive you have aligns with values of the NanoTrasen Corporation, but your... past incidents, and lack of seniority may prove to be obstacles in your career progression. Do note, also, that extensive psychological screening and mindshield implantations will be necessary, so I hope you're not neuroaverse.

[DECEMBER MARTINEZ] It doesn't say it on there? Well, uh, I'm not. I'd be A-OK getting a mindshield, and all that other stuff. So, when can I expect all this to happen?

[UNKNOWN VOICE] I'm afraid I was getting ahead of myself. Ultimately, it is not for me to decide, but I wish you good luck. You should hear back from us in approximately 3-4 months.

A nice little story to give a more concrete background for my chronic fire hazard engineer! She's also been fun to play Captain with, so I wanted to write something to help me and others understand how a woman like her could get into a command role.

It's also very encouraged to draw her, and I think that would honestly make my week.
