Charon was a young boy of Tarsel, one of many born to the numerous peasant farming families that sowed its bountiful fields. His life was hard, as all of the farm boys’ lives were, but he grinned and bore it with a joyful and exuberant optimism. His determination to do right by those who shared a presence in his life led him to be generous beyond his means, often leaving him without the last bites of his meal or the last silvers of his allowance. Always surrounded by friends and beloved by his community, his continued existence was a light in the lives of all around him.
Charon’s destiny was forever altered one afternoon thanks to a rotting wooden board and a frigid river below a bridge. The sudden chill of the river drove the air from his lungs, and the water was only too happy to fill the space left behind. Flailing arms and legs found no solid purchase on the riverbed, and the turbulent current threw the poor boy into jagged rocks and hidden tree roots. Slowly but surely the farm boy’s energy was spent, and his newly-scheduled meeting with the river of souls rapidly approached.
Just on the edge of death, Charon’s soul was latched onto by something ancient and unworldly. Something that hadn’t been named in eons had cast a glance in the right direction at the right time and saw an opportunity that couldn’t be missed. A dire bargain offered, a silent pact made, a mere blink in the grand scale of time was all it took for Death to be denied its supper. The boy found himself on the shores, coughing water and black ichor which pulsed and oozed as it flowed from his mouth, a mark of the infernal contract forever etched into his spirit. Charon must now grow into his newfound ‘gifts’, learn all he can of what he has become, and walk a fine line between his own desires and morals and those of his unknowable new master, all the while avoiding the grisly karmic fate of one who has cheated the Hoarder of Souls.
What made you join Funky Station?: I'm kinda bored of Wizden atm, and while I'm definitely enjoying RMC14 I wanna find something more in line with a typical SS14 experience while still being fresh and exciting. Hopefully this is it?
