Ties-the-Knot started out doing under-the-table marriage licensing. They didn't ask why- but extra spending money never hurt during grad school. They were well known for responding to requests with: "Sure. Why? You know what, nevermind actually, I don't want to know." This got them into a lot of trouble because people would tell them things they shouldn't have, but they would often respond to this by covering their ears and shouting 'LALALA' to avoid it. It didn't work, and they were questioned by security numerous times because they were the person last seen with a suspect.
more literal: constantly trying to avoid being implicated, but gets dragged into it anyway. Follows through with professional responsibilities, automatically wanting to become a "high-achiever" but catching themselves because they're not paid for that. But if they're asked directly they'll probably do it- anything to avoid conflict.
