Dove's Drabbles

Post by Dove »

Dusk is falling on the city of a thousand hopes, the long shadows made darker in contrast with the fading pinks and oranges of sunset. But even here as twilight looms the darkness is not as oppressive as it had been on station, the lights of the city twinkling to life without the threat of attack. Even CentComm had been dark, and when I finally stepped foot on the shuttle home, it was blinding after a shift spent with only the thin beam of a flashlight to guide me on the ruins. For once I was thankful for the glaring, buzzing, LED’s NanoTrasen puts on their long-range commuter shuttles, finally enough light to read by. I got through a whole chapter on the shuttle, then another half under the soft golden bulbs at the prime city terminal before my train was announced, first in the Vox-tongue, then Arachiss, and finally English

“The Gray-Crest train is now boarding at platform six, please ensure all baggage remains behind the blue line.”

I make my way over and find a seat at the back of the car, tucking my extra limbs tight and close to my body. I’m already a big guy, no need to take up more space than I deserve. I open my book for a minute before a familiar purple hand ruffles my head-fur, and Curi takes the seat next to me. She’s already taken her wig off, a bright pink tuft peeking out from the corner of her satchel. She slumps her head onto my shoulder.

“You would not believe the day I had.”

I slip my book back into my bag and spread my arm over the back of the seat.

“Try me.”

As the train speeds along the rails, making its way out of the city proper, she tells me about her shift. How she had been unable to track one anom for far longer than was comfortable, and had finally found it; A gravitational anomaly on the verge of criticality inside the singularity engine. Her voice is weary, all her adrenaline long spent, and she dozes, the motion of the train relaxing as a lullaby. It isn’t a long trip, but long enough for her to startle out of half-sleep when we reach our stop at the bottom of a hill, a few other passengers departing with us before the train speeds off deeper into the Gray-Crests. She looks down at me with her most pleading expression, all batting eyelashes and stuck out bottom lip.

“Steevie..my feet hurt...and I’m sooo tired.”

I roll my shoulders, I’m sore from salv work, but I’m used to it, so I squat down and smile as she coos and hops onto my back. She asks about my shift as I walk us up the hill, but I don’t really know what to say, so I brush it off as just another day of fixing the station and keeping the lights on. Finally the soft glow from the porch light comes into view, shining off the well-loved metal of Jeffreys motorcycle where it sits on the path. I can’t help but smile as I brush my fingers along the leathery seat, hoping he’ll let me borrow it for long ride into the desert again. The door opens silently for my card, voices drifting over from the kitchen over the sounds of table setting. My family sits around the table; Papa helping Trilla cut her food, Jade and Jasper asking Jeffrey about his upcoming cases, and Dad taking the last dish from the fridge. He smiles when he spots us, lips curling up just enough for a gleaming canine to begin to peek out.

“Looks like you two are just in time.”

I finally let Bound slip off my back so we can take off our shoes and hang up our bags, then sit at the empty chairs around the table. Everything is warm and relaxing, idle chatter filling my head as I fill my plate. School awards, mechanical repairs and legal cases, my family is a wealth of life events to talk about. Then, Dad casually drawls something that makes my fur puff up, skin prickling with a small shiver.

"You know, I heard about the strangest thing today. Apparently one of our stations in the Scarlet sector was at the edge of disputed territory today. Upper management had the crew remove all the interior lights to avoid drone attacks."

A bite of pasta forms a lump in my throat, sticking to the walls of my esophagus until I force it down with a hard swallow. I look over at Papa, his brow furrowed with concern.

“Seems like a dangerous place to have a station. Don’t ya’ll have people go out and clear them spaces before ya build em?”

Dad just shrugs, running a claw around the edge of his plate.

“Oh you know how it is my darling, imaginary lines in space change at a whim and nobody files the proper paperwork.” He sips at his wine. “In any case, the crew did a remarkable job. No major incidents occurred. And, it seems someone had the brilliant idea to deploy a decoy. Apparently the salvager lit up an asteroid after mining it, and a drone went right for it! Isn't that just marvelous Steeve?"

He looks over at me, his face the picture of nonchalance. Those piercing blue eyes that tear apart false narratives fixed on me, and I feel like my heart is about to explode. Does he know I quit the engineering department? Is he going to transfer me back? Will I never get to work for cargo ever again??

“Yeah...really cool.”

"It's just like your favorite movie Master and Commander isn't it?” He shrugs, a gentle smile on his face. “Either way, I'll be sure to send some congratulations to Mr Daniel Vernandes for coming up with the plan."

Curi glances over at me before piping up, tracing her finger around the rim of her glass.

"Oh I think I've seen him around robotics, didn't know he worked salvage too. Was he the only salvager that shift?"

Dad nods and leans over to refill her wine.

"It would seem so, in any case he had a solid idea and executed it well, that deserves recognition at the very least. And some form of compensation, in my opinion."

The rest of dinner passes smoothly, conversation once again turning to lighter subjects. Play-dates and art projects, the recounting of a sports victory. When the table is finally clear I head down to my room rather than staying upstairs for a movie. The mattress wooshes as I fall onto it, spreading my limbs all the way to the corners. The view out the window reminds me of the views from the station, all dark expanse and countless tiny points of lights. Each star is a sun, a million worlds revolving around them, and each light here is a person with hopes and dreams. And we’re all connected because we’re all here in the same universe. I’m finally broken from my thoughts when Curi flops down next to me.

“You’re welcome for getting your name wiped off the manifest lil bro, but I’m a tad hurt you didn’t tell me you transferred departments.”

I keep my face half-buried in the pillow and murmur.

“Thank you Curi.”

She flexes her spines until they click, then pokes me in the side.

“Hey, look at me.”

I crane my neck over to see her frowning, pink brows deeply set over her glowing eyes.

"You really should just tell them. I get that Dad is…. I get why you don’t wanna tell him, but he really can’t stop you from doing what you want. And even if he worries, Papa would be so proud of you.”

I turn over and sigh, she’s right, of course she is. Trained to maybe one day follow in our father’s footsteps, wise and sensible Curiosity.

“I...I’m gonna tell them, I promise. I guess I just..want to feel ready you know?”

She nods and smiles, not her normal toothy grin but something softer, like how she always smiled when I took her hand as a kid on the way to the park. From big sister to little brother.

“Alright, just make it soon tough guy, or I’m gonna start needing bribes. And baby? You cannot afford me~.”

I can’t help myself from laughing out loud, pedipalps spreading wide with no regard to how it looks or what people might think. She giggles in return even as I push her off my bed, snatching one of my novels before scampering out of my room. I sigh again and turn off my lamp, staring out the window until my eyes can no longer stay open, slipping into dreamless sleep.

The maintenance corridors on this station are even darker than normal, lit only rarely by dim red bulbs that flicker and buzz on corroded wires. The only sounds are the constant thrum of bulbs, the quickening tone of the anomaly locator, and the ringing slap of my tennis shoes on metal catwalks. I smack the device with the palm of my hand, frustrated after having done several laps around the station already.

"Where are you, lil fuckin shit?"

But nothing answers me as I run a hand against the rusting wall -stupid idea, can’t remember my last tetanus shot-, the locator constantly pinging, the very air around me waving, distorting. I sigh and rub my forehead, tempted to rip off my wig when a stray pink strand brushes against my eye. I'm about to call for help from a borg when a voice comes out over common and I feel my chest go tight.

"There is a gravitational anomaly in the singularity chamber."

With that simple message its like the world has dropped out from under me. How long has this fucking thing been left un-scanned? Pulsing, growing, getting more dangerous by the minute. My shoes pound against the catwalk, clanging strides a drumbeat of doom deafening me as I run. I finally emerge into the main halls, grabbing onto the airlock frame as I skid into the light. I shout over comms and hope for once my fucking coworkers get off their ass and help me.

“I need a fucking C.H.I.M.P printed and a borg to let me into engi ASAP!”

I can’t remember the last time I ran this fast, and my lungs are burning as I reach sci in record time, grabbing the freshly printed gun from across the counter. I heave for breath as I sprint to engineering, slamming the hi-cap from my flashlight into the C.H.I.M.P on the way. An engi unit is waiting at the door, whirring as it opens each airlock after the other until we are in the antechamber. It unlocks a locker and rolls towards the items inside. The air here waves with the force from the singularity, my hands hard to maneuver as I clamber into an engineering hard-suit. It is heavy, far heavier than any EVA I’ve worn before, the helmet blocking my peripheral vision and making my limbs feel like they are made of lead.

The borg leads me to the airlock, the Geiger counter installed in the suit begins to tick, then rises into a screaming chorus as the airlock opens. My mouth tastes like metal, I feel like every step is a millennia, I can see the other side of the chamber as it stretches over the false horizon. And there is the anomaly, a writhing dark mass nestled next to one of the emitters like an old friend, wavering with its own strange forces. My scanner takes an eternity, and when it’s finally done the numbers fill me with dread, ninety-three percent and unstable. My mouth is dry, my head pounding, and I force my hands to be steady as I set the particles to Epsilon.

The C.H.I.M.P is far quicker than its hundred pound relative. Firing off round after round, I don’t stop pulling the trigger until the anomaly reduces to a semi-solid blob on the catwalk. My heart is pounding in my ears, overpowering even the Geiger counter as I stumble towards the airlock, the borg guiding me along the catwalk and letting me lean on them. I trip inside the antechamber and rip the helmet off, slumping against the locker, catching my breath before removing the suit. I can feel a wave of nausea climbing up, and force it down with a swig of vodka from my satchel. My voice is hoarse, burned from the vodka, the strain of running and the realization we all almost died.

"Fuck me dude"

The borg regards me with little more than a buzz, but seems content to let me sit a moment. I take out a pack and my lighter with shaking hands, thumbing over the engraving before clicking it to life, inhaling deeply to feel the smoke fills my lungs. I stay there, crouched against the locker until the ember burns out, and my heart no longer pounds in my chest.

"When you have eliminated the impossible whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth".

I read that in one of Steeve’s books, and I guess it makes sense. I stare down at the paper on my desk, a timeline of impossible events reported by nearly all the crew since the start of the shift. Of all things they claim the supermatter is granting wishes. An advanced mop for a maid, all access for an assistant, and even enough points on a single disk to complete all the scientific research for the day and then some. But the fact remains, all of those things could have been achieved through mundane means -well, the disk was a bit far fetched I had to admit-, but a wish granting supermatter is just so out of pocket, how the hell can I accept what I haven’t even seen for myself? I rub at my temples, a small headache forming just behind my eyes. I go to shake out a drom and find my pack empty, sighing deeply as I rise from the desk and slip my lab-coat back on. I stop for a second, looking at the door, there is also the matter that this thing -if it exists- has been moving steadily through each member of crew, so there is a distinct possibility that I too will be whisked away. But hopefully I can get another pack of smokes before that happens.

As I walk out the door my vision goes white and the world spins, a force rippling through every atom of my body like the wave from a delamination. One moment I am standing in the hall, the next I am somewhere entirely different. I can see the stars but stand on solid ground, half the area is filled with lush green grass and wildflowers that wave against my ankles, anomalous bulbs pulsing softly around me. The other is filled with clean shallow water, reflecting the multi-colored light of large crystals. And there in the center, towering above everything is the Supermatter. Entity, deity, granter of wishes. I stumble back a bit, suddenly over-taken by dread, I don’t have my suit on and this thing could be shooting me full of deadly radiation. Then it speaks to me, voice booming yet soft, a chorus of many, yet clear as one.

"Hello little one"

I swallow heavily, my tongue sticking to the roof of my mouth as I manage to whisper out

"Hi.."

It glows brighter when it speaks, a pulsing light following the patterns of speech.

"There are many of you today. But I am pleased to see you regardless."

I take a deep breath, a little calmer now and sit down in the grass, knees up to my chin.

"Its uh, nice to meet you too."

I smile and remove my beret, placing it on the grass next to me. Best to be polite when dealing with the unknown. I can only hope that basic manners are enough to get me through this encounter.

"If you are unaware, I am here to grant you any one wish. However, it cannot bring harm to another, nor grant yourself immortality."

I pick at the sleeve of my labcoat, a loose thread unfurling like spidersilk.

"Well geez, this is kinda awkward, but I really can't..think of anything?"

I peer at it under my bangs, as if I could discern an expression of displeasure from the face of a crystal. It hums a bit, tone more curious than anything.

"Truly, nothing?"

I shrug and wind my fingers into the grass, careful not to pull any up as I trace patterns into it. I can almost imagine it tilting in curiosity. I try to think of something, anything I could ask for, my mind drawing blanks on items, either useful or fun. The only thing I can think about is how this can be happening, so far beyond the nodes of artifacts or abilities of anomalies. It hums softly.

"Hmm. That is alright. I can grant you anything as simple as a snack you've wished to try, or something as grand as machinery. You wish it, I bring it to life."

Suddenly I think of something, something I've wanted for a long time, something to maybe heal the hurt I've carried for so long.

"I guess I have been thinking of my family lately, my biological one at least. I..I don’t know if I have any out there, my dad's been looking for me, but my parents didn't leave any usable records."

I take a deep breath, part hopeful, part bracing for crushing disappointment.

"Could you...tell me where my grandpa is? If I have one?"

I fist my fingers into the grass, leaning forward as it hums, thinking.

"Hmm...That is a task, but I can certainly do my best to grasp it."

"I wont be mad if you cant"

I quickly blurt out and give a shy smile, I would hate to offend it after all. It hums for a while, then I hear a sound, like a bell, clear and quick. I feel a pull deep inside me, a warmth spreading out from my heart to my fingers. I lurch to my left as if physically pulled, hands shooting out to keep me from falling over. My mind is filled with something vague, but its warm, and hopeful. I look out towards the stars, one of them seems brighter than the rest.

"Oh. I...I feel like I know where to go."

I didn't even realize I had started to cry, tears running down my cheeks in hot trails. I rub at my eyes, my voice cracking and raw.

"Thank you."

It glows soothingly, calming my inner turmoil.

"I hope I was of help."

"I think you were, yeah"

"That is all I desire, that I fulfill your wish. I hope that in time, you can find who you are looking for."

It glows brightly, overpowering the light from all the smaller crystals, turning the shallow pool to fire as the sun does to the ocean. I rise from the ground, feeling a bit sheepish to be thinking of this being as a supermatter.

"Do you...have a name?"

The water around it ripples out as if its shaking its head.

"Not exactly. Your kind call me an SM. I take the shape of something familiar. This "SM" must be what is familiar to you all. Familiar, and powerful.” It pauses slightly. “Shall I return you home now?

I take a deep breath and nod, placing my beret back on my head and brushing dirt off my skirt.

"We will never meet again, but it was a pleasure to meet you. May you be safe wherever this path takes you."

I feel sadness at this, but don’t stop smiling, cant stop smiling. This..being, this... wonderful being, has given me a gift I could never even dream of receiving. Just as I was brought to this place I leave it, back on the station before I can blink. I raise my hand to my face, covering my mouth as I whisper, still hardly able to believe what I have seen.

"Wow."
