it's something i've noticed happens now and then, and generally rubs me the wrong way. to clarify, i'm not physically disabled myself but i care for a family member who is. i know bigotry in general is considered a no-no even in character and i'm incredibly thankful for that, so i was wondering if stealing a person's mobility aid is considered a rulebreak?
the circumstances that upset me the most when i see this happen are when a person repeatedly steals a person's mobility aid seemingly just because they can. i had a round where a someone's cane was stolen from them, and they were roleplaying out feeling physical pain because of their lack of mobility aid. i brought them a replacement cane, which was later stolen from them as well by the same person. in a different round, i saw an officer beat a person and steal their cane, then throw it down disposals in front of them. both of those scenes were uncomfortable and upsetting for me to watch, and generally left me with a sour taste in my mouth.
i'd be more understanding if it was stolen to slow a pursuing officer or command member down, or to make it more difficult for a murder victim to escape, but often when i do see canes being stolen, it feels like its just because people find it funny to do so. there's no antag objectives to my knowledge that make it necessary to steal a cane, and you can just as easily evade arrest or kill someone without stealing their mobility aid. it just doesn't feel like something that needs to happen, to me at least.
so i just want to ask for clarification, is it considered ableist to steal a person's mobility aid from them? should i ahelp it if i see it happen?
