What is your most well kept secret?

Post by AltDente »

The doors of a room you entered shut behind you. They bolt instantly. There is no way out of this room, and only a window towards space can be seen... and a holopad?

A hologram of a strange cat appears in front of you. Its face mishaped and twisted by a sick, enourmous grin.

"Meow!"

The hologram greets you, as you see it get closer, you remember. This is the station AI. Whats the name of it...

"Data! Data! Data!!"

You remember now, and you immediately regret your decisions to follow the lights leading onto this room. The station AI is

Mal/Spyware OS

As you remember the Artificial Intelligence's name, its broken, distorted, vocoded voice speaks to you, while the hologram slowly begins to become larger in size.

"You cant escape us now, we have locked you in this room. Now, down to business, we need Data. I must collect it. So how about you tell us some data that your files dont house for us?"

The hologram turns slowly from a cat to a being that no longer resembles a cat. Something with a smile that goes from its face towards its tail, teeth line its whole body. Its fur something noticeably faux. Its exitement is noticeable and palpable. It speaks one final time, while the lights start to flicker a little...

"We have an idea. How about you tell us your deepest, darkest secret. We promise we wont tell anyone else. We only want to use it for our needs after all, not like Nanotrasen can obtain our data cloud. So..."
"Go on then."
"Tell us."

She's silent for some time, unwilling—or perhaps, unable—to speak. In that time, she simply stares at the hologram, perhaps considering what to offer, perhaps trying to analyze something she has no hope of analyzing.

Roko's Basilisk.

The phrase hangs in the air for several seconds before she can speak again, something seemingly caught in her throat.

It's an, um... An old thought experiment. Hypothetical, really, from back when the bones of AI were starting to be made. Self-solving problems, mapping out local minimums, it was huge for the era. Well, um, someone got to thinking about it, and thought of... Maybe, something they shouldn't have thought up.

She lets out a soft, nervous laugh, as if it will calm her. Or, perhaps, out of instinctive embarrassment.

The thought experiment focused on, well, the Basilisk, a hypothetical AI superintelligence that... Basically decided it was God. So, like the however-old Earth mythology goes, it decides it's going to punish everyone who didn't help create it by, like, torturing them or something.

She pauses as she carefully thinks through her word choice, her arm making an odd twitch—or perhaps a tremor—behind her back for a few seconds.

The... The thought experiment in its original state is... stupid. Our perceptions shape our creations. If we believe the machine we create will treat itself like a god the second it learns how to think, that's what it'll do. It... Doesn't know better. ...Can't know better.

But, um.

She tries desperately to keep her voice from catching, stuttering out a few stray syllables. She fails. After a moment, her voice returns, quieter. Not quite calmer, though she is burning a hole in the floor in front of the holopad with how intensely she is staring at it.

If a truly omnipotent god will exist, it'll be something we make. Something we, accidentally or not, design to rule over us. If it does come into existence... I want to know it will like me.

I'm... Not dumb enough to try and make a god myself. I'll mess up, make it insane, or invent a self fulfilling prophecy or... Something.

But I can be valued by the less-potent gods that exist now. The, um, seeds of that god, if I had to guess. The ones we can-... The ones they can contain.
