I like playing a character that mostly jokes around but get serious for the right moments.
One that has weaknesses such as substance abuse they try to hide or being susceptible to flattery or bribes.
Example:
Elias Jaxon
Elias is an ex-Sol Fed Sergeant who probably spent way too long in the trenches and now uses bad puns and sarcasm to avoid talking about it. Most of the time he’s just the station jokester. But he flips a switch when things get real. As soon as a Code Red hits or someone pulls a weapon, the jokes stop and he gets quiet, professional, and honestly a bit intense.
The Messy Parts:
He’s a total sucker for a compliment. If a HoS tells him he’s doing a great job or gives him a bit of praise, he’ll basically do whatever they want, even if it’s a suicide mission. He also has a "problem" with medical ethanol to deal with the stress, which he tries to hide behind a lot of peppermint gum and excuses about cleaning his gear.
