Growing up, Mikalis didn't have a lot of hope of ever escaping the circumstances he was raised in. He didn’t care about learning, he just figured he would end up another cog in the machine or die before it became his problem. The oldest of three, he watched his parents work themselves to death from stress and negligent safety conditions just to barely keep the family afloat. This left Mikalis as the sole adult family member remaining for his younger siblings.
He realizes that while he might not be able to amount to much just based on limited resources, he deeply wants to give his siblings the chances he was never given. Taking the job with NanoTrasen enables him to provide for them, and he gives everything he can at work, but he also has FIRM boundaries around any safety risks. He is very no-nonsense after watching his parents work themselves to death. He sacrifices enough of himself to give his siblings everything he can, but he draws the line at physical danger.
