The culture surrounding medical

Post by Nazariel »

I've talked about this with several people in the discord who share a similar opinion, but I personnally am not a fan of the whole "treating medbay as a loading screen" culture (as in, stuff like wordlessly entering medbay, laying down to a bed and basically alt-tab'ing until you're fully healed)

I obviously have NOTHING personnal against people who do that, after all we all just want to play the video game, but I just think medbay should be treated as more than that. So I just want to see you guys' opinions on this, if you do think I'm wrong and that it's good that medbay is just that, if you guys do anything as doctor/CMO to make it more interesting/engaging for both patient and doctor (Personnally I've always tried to force conversation with my patients, even just a "So what happened to you?" can go a long way. And also I will make people file paperwork when they get injured in greenshifts :godo: )

I've talked about this with several people who share a similar opinion, but I personnally am not a fan of the whole "treating medbay as a inconvenience" culture (as in, stuff like wordlessly entering medbay, laying down to a bed and saying nothing until you're fully healed)

I obviously have NOTHING personnal against people who do that, after all we all just want to do our jobs, but I just think medbay should be treated as more than that. And also I will make people file paperwork when they get injured on calmer days :godo: )

It's weird, right? I swear, people think that the Medical Doctors are robots... I personally try to strike up a conversation any time I'm unfortunate enough to have to head over there. As a Chef once, I brought over some food and drinks, and they were quite receptive. It's not hard to feel bad for the overworked Medics who only get a "Thanks."

Of course, it's not all on the person going into the Medical Bay, I think taking your time to do a proper physical checkup afterwards would be a good idea. Doesn't mean that it's okay to act like you're the one being inconvenienced by having to drag yourself (or being dragged) to Medical! Hopefully people start to catch on that it's very disheartening to put a lot of effort into saving someone's life, only to be treated like a machine.

I think (at least part of) the issue is that patients have very little to do otherwise because in reality all you need to do is sit still on a bed and let the doctors handle it. Beyond RP there's no incentive to do anything else and as such the people who feel the need to have an incentive don't get one. Ideally we'd be in a game where you don't need an incentive to talk to people, being it's an RP game and all, but some people don't play it for that. Another issue I see is just that people don't care about their injuries beyond it slowing them down. Sure you've just fended off a carp and stopped the bleeding early enough, but those are still injuries that SHOULD be checked out unless they're the equivalent of a light scratch. The only people I see coming into med usually are people that are dead, dying, or hurt enough to be slowed and therefore inconvenienced.

I feel that people don't interact with the doctors because they end up in medical so often that it's routine and they get bored or so little there's very little chance to do much beyond give a little story beyond what happened and a thanks.

Yeah I've had multiple rounds where the doctors try to scan me or just even just drag me in while I'm heading to medical. It's very weird.

I personally think in terms of medical work, there are a few design points that would be useful:

  • Diagnosis that requires patient/doctor interaction ("does it hurt when I do this?")

  • More involved treatment than just chems, like having to actually set bones and dress wounds

  • Actual treatment being relatively quick for most injuries but having a lasting effect on characters (like you're in a cast or whatever for 15-30 minutes)

medical is honestly the hardest department to RP as and with due to the nature of the game systems and department as a whole,

-doctors don't RP because normally bodies are piling up and they need to make sure people don't rot/leave the server/take a ghost role

-patients don't RP because the doctors are focused on speed and efficiency

-some doctors (cough including me cough) get overwhelmed when lots of bodies start flooding in and devote all their attention to getting people back on their feet.

i do like what snoobie said, more treatments than chems would be GREAT, especially if they are more long term than chems

but also i think a casualties unknown-esc system with different items for different types of wounds where you do a little minigame to treat stuff would be really good for the medical system as a whole, imagine desperately trying to bandage yourself as you're hunted by an antagonist or security. it would allow for skilled players to treat wounds faster and make medical more engaging than "read dosage, click a few times, wait"

leave the chems as something for emergency situations like a flooded medbay or combat healing.
